ABINGTON, MA - In 2004, Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" was so popular that the novel could barely be kept on the shelves at local bookstores. Today, the "Twilight" series is all the rage among teens and young adults. But what should readers do once all the pages have been turned and those books are just taking up space? At the Elm Street entrance of the United Church of Christ in Abington, there's a bin where those books can be put to good use, as well as any CDs, DVDs, videos and audio books. Got Books Inc., an organization out of Lawrence, is collecting those materials and donating a portion of the profits to the Norma Kent Pastoral Counseling Center of Abington. Judy MacKenzie, a therapist at the center, said the Norma Kent center provides therapy and counseling to patients, and offers an option of incorporating religion. MacKenzie said the book drive will help keep the center afloat. "We do various fundraising through the year because some people who have no insurance or limited insurance, we do what we can, but the people here need some compensation," she said.

BURLINGTON, MA - The Retarded Adult Rehabilitation Association (RARA) has recently begun a partnership with local bookseller Used Book Superstore in Burlington to be paid for all books donated at the retail location. Other items acceptable for donation include DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, and audio books. RARA, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Lowell, serves developmentally delayed adults in the Greater Merrimack Valley region by providing programs and classes as social, recreational, educational, and pre-vocational outlets. Their mission is to promote public awareness and understanding of the needs and issues specific to the mentally handicapped and their families. When patrons choose to donate their unneeded books to RARA at the bookstore, they will immediately receive a tax receipt on behalf of RARA. The Used Book Superstore will then buy the items from RARA and they will be sorted by the bookstore's parent company, Got Books, to determine their best future use, including stocking the shelves at the local bookstores. Since 2006, Got Books has raised more than $39,000 for RARA's causes through their book collection fund-raising program and their charity book sale, allowing RARA to purchase a brand new 15-passenger van and fund their diverse community programming.
