Book Program Gets Good Reads in Hands of Canton Soldiers Serving Overseas
CANTON, MA - Soldiers from Canton who are overseas can’t be sure when they are coming home, but they can be sure they will have reading materials while they are serving their country. The Book For Troops program — recently launched by the Got Books company of Lawrence — is in full swing right now. Officials at the company say they need families of soldiers from Canton to come forth, so packages of books can be sent to their loved ones. “Our goal for 2008 is to ship 25,000 books to soldiers overseas,” said Books For Troops spokesperson Michelle Bushee, adding interested families can call her directly or log onto the Got Books Web site. Bushee said the Got Books company specializes in collecting unwanted books and redistributing them to the public, in this case, to troops serving the country. She said the company has more than 300 book drop-off locations around New England. The company also sponsors the Books For Teachers program, which redistributes books to schools. “Our goal is to keep books out of the trash,” Bushee said. She said the idea for the Books For Troops program came about last year and was launched in January, 2008. She added the company has a lot of connections to the military, noting the president of the Got Books company, Bob Ticehurst, is a former Marine. “We figured there was a definite need for something like this,” Bushee said.Read More...
