Librarians say Got Books Doesn’t Impact Donations

DERRY, NH – When a Got Books bin appeared recently outside the Masonic Temple on East Broadway in Derry, the nearby library staff was less than excited — and more than a little concerned. Got Books is a for-profit company that places collection bins around Southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The company collects donated books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and records. It pays the host site, often a school, municipality or nonprofit group, a per-pound fee for what’s collected. For their part, the Masons said they will use the money they get to preserve their building and support local charities. A poll of local libraries in communities with one or more Got Books bins may offer Lynch some hope. Most library directors said they had seen no negative impact from the collection bins. In fact, many of them use the containers themselves. Hampstead Public Library Director Peggy Thrasher said that library, too, relies on donations to replace worn volumes and for the library book sales, at which they raise a “significant” amount of money. The Got Books bin, at the town Highway Department, hasn’t had a negative effect in Hampstead. In fact, Thrasher said, it’s been a help. She said the library still gets plenty of donations. “I’m sure there are some good donations that go to Got Books that could come here,” Thrasher said. “But we really get all the donations we can handle.” Read More…
