Wilmington, MA – Got Books, Inc. the leading used book collection and reuse company in New England in partnership with Local Heroes, in Wilmington, MA has announced it will send hundreds of golf clubs and thousands of golf balls to U.S. Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The clubs and balls will are being sent in multiple shipments over the next two weeks.
The golf clubs were donated by individuals and collected in the Burlington, Danvers, and Saugus MA and Nashua and Salem, NH Used Book Superstores. They will be used as a much-needed recreational opportunity for the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We’ve worked with Local Heroes for several years providing free books and DVDs for the care packages they send to our troops,” comments Bob Ticehurst, CEO and founder of Got Books, Inc. and the Used Book Superstores. “As a former Marine I know the kinds of stresses our men and women in the services experience. The idea for the clubs came from conversations with some of the guys still on active duty in Afghanistan. We immediately rolled out the idea for collection to our superstores and the response was great. Hundreds of golf clubs and golf balls were donated! Got Books is committed to working with Local Heroes to do what ever we can to bring to help our troops.”
Got Books, Inc runs a ‘Books for Troops’ program – anyone in the service can request FREE books from us just by going to the company website. More than 25,000 books have already been sent U.S. troops overseas.
Michael Haught, a Sergeant in the Massachusetts National Guard, Alfa Battery First Battalion of the 101st Field Artillery is returning to Afghanistan. He and his unit will be receiving golf clubs and golf balls from the Got Books and Local Heroes campaign. Sergeant Haught talked about the need for recreation during war, “At the end of a mission, it’s great to be able to release stress by rifling golf balls. The guys like playing golf and this is so much better than a video game – we shoot balls off a local mountaintop – it’s great for morale.”
Louis Cimaglia, Founder/President of Local Heroes adds “Acts of charity from the community are extremely important to the success of our troops. It’s the little things from home that can have a large positive impact on the success of our soldiers. The golf clubs are much appreciated.”
